The trail was mostly covered in a stream so my friend and I headed to the top of a hillside to the left and walked the ridge line up there to the viewpoint. We tried to take the trail back but much of it was like walking through a muddy stream. While we were headed up, it started snowing and there is already a lot of snow up there that hasn't quite melted.
I've done this hike three times since October and a couple things I take issue with are the poor condition of the road for driving and how poorly it's all marked.
That being said, the view is totally spectacular and worth putting up with all of that and in snow/mud/37* temps. I'd do it again.
We completed the hike, it was not under ideal circumstances, and will be back in warmer weather.

Looks different in the winter!
How was the dirt road beyond the cattle gate? Could you drive all the way to the trailhead?

No. I stopped maybe 1/2 mile short Bc my Subaru Forester could not get through the deep mud. The road is terrible and every time I have driven it, I've been very nervous. If you have a truck or something a little more rugged, I wouldn't worry too much though.

I could barely make it up that road in good weather. Those ruts make me sweat. Haha thanks for the info.
