Was suppose to be a cloudy day but ended up being pretty beautiful, albeit not totally clear. I was confused about this trail. We parked across from the fire station walked up the road to the next forest/logging road that was blocked off by a yellow gate with no lock (up the hill). I didn't realize the walk up the logging road and then eventually the trail road would be so long. But it seems like a good mile and a half before you hit the unplowed trail road and then another 1/2 mile up that before you reach the trailhead. I had expected it to see the trail road turn off a lot sooner. Apparently there are several ways you can head up, as there were a few guys that walked right past the trail sign and continued up the road to eventually end up on the trail, as well as there is a loop that takes you along the ridge and spits you out behind the fire station. Anyways. If you are like me you want to know what to look for. The logging road is not marked but is quarter mile from the fire station on the right. The trail road off the logging road is marked with blue and yellow tags on either trees framing the road on your right. The Hex mountain trailhead sign is fairly big and obvious but it is standing beneath a few trees which it could easily blend in with. We used both snowshoes and microspikes on this hike, so for the time being I would advise having both, if not at least snowshoes. Lastly, tons of snowmobiles around there area, and on the same day we were up there two snowmobilers got hit with an avalanche up at Hawkins Mountain, which is only 20 minutes further north of hex. So be careful.
