Elk Lakes — Saturday, Apr. 1, 2017

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
The lake
The road to the trailhead is difficult as most of the soft top layer of gravel has eroded away, leaving large, exposed, and sometimes jagged rocks on the surface. Luckily there aren't many potholes or dips to deal with. There is a tree down over the road, but most vehicles should be able to make it under while brushing against the remaining branches. I parked just before the downed tree as I didn't want to put my car under any more strain, but it's definitely possible to drive all the way to the parking turnout. It's about a mile from the tree to the trailhead. The trail is in good condition, and a few wildflowers are just starting to come out! I only saw one car driving out on my way in, and I had the trail all to myself. Looks like this trail is a good pick if you want some solitude. The color of the lake is spectacular and made for a great lunch spot!
