The road up is your pretty standard well-maintained forest service road. You'll be dodging potholes, but almost any clearance vehicle should be fine. The parking area is very small; when we got there mid-afternoon on a Saturday, people were parked down the sides of the road. This is fine, but PLEASE make sure you pull as far over as possible when doing this! There were some large trucks and SUVs that were too far to the middle, and we had to fold in our mirrors on our mid-size truck to squeeze through. Don't be rude.
Trail is in good condition; I wouldn't say it's appropriate for small children, though, unless you're willing to carry them for a bit/they're used to uneven ground. There are rocks, roots, steps, a log bridge, and kind of rough board-walks. Our 10 pound dog did fine on the trail though (to be fair, he's very used to hiking).
Despite the number of cars in the parking area, we didn't run into too many people, which was nice. Almost every group we passed had a dog, either on or off leash. I did see some signs of past bear activity; I'd recommend being alert if you're hiking when there aren't lots of people.
