The road to the trailhead is completely smooth, although there are barriers set up approximately one mile from the trailhead to block access (add one mile each way to hike length). The lower portion of the trail is pretty clear of obstacles, although snow starts about two miles from the lake. I had microspikes, but they didn't seem all that effective on soft snow. GPS or route finding is strongly suggested, as once you hit the snowpack there is not a good path to follow. (The sun also melted my footprints, so on the way back down, I couldn't identify where I had hiked.) That said, I have never seen this lake, or any others, look so incredibly beautiful!
