Trip Report

Sauk Mountain — Thursday, Jul. 20, 2017

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

We reached the trailhead around 9:15 on this grey Thursday morning to find only two other cars in the parking lot. Road was easily passible with only a few easily dodge potholes until just before the lot where an entire corner of the road is taken up by a multitude of deep potholes. It could be passed with care by all cars (and was judging by the cars in the parking lot), but I would recommend a high clearance vehicle, if possible. Although the fog and clouds this date obstructed the wonderful views that are possible to see from this hike, we still enjoyed the abundance of wildflowers, and the mist gave the whole hike a magical quality. This is an absolutely stunning hike, with views and flowers from the second you leave the parking lot. There are still snow fields covering portions of the trail at the top that might be difficult without proper gear. We opted to turn around and avoid the snow, given the limited traction of our footwear. I absolutely adore this hike and will be back again and again to take in the scenery.
