Trip Report

Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge — Monday, Jan. 8, 2018

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Great Blue Heron

Today we spent three hours at Nisqually hoping to see the Northern Saw-Whet Owl which has been roosting in a small cedar tree along the entrance road near the first parking area. Today it was not seen. We did see herons, a muskrat, 2 deer, eagles, cackling and Canadian geese, green-winged teal, shovelers, widgeon, greater yellowlegs, and a pair of hooded mergansers. Many people were enjoying the day and warmer weather.

Muskrat
Male Green-winged teal

Bummer you didn't get to see the owl! We wouldn't have know it was there except for the volunteer that showed us when we drove in. Cool sighting of the muskrat tho

The muskrat was right beside the dike trail to the estuary boardwalk and it was very cool to watch! We enjoy your trip reports! Happy hiking!
