Can you wear tennis shoes on this hike? Apparently, yes. Should you wear tennis shoes on this hike? Absolutely not. You will be crossing wide streams, muddy sections of trail, and most notably, boulder fields where you are traversing large sections of rock after rock after rock. Your feet are going to be exhausted from trying to grip rocks for hours. Also, at the end of the trail you will encounter some snow and it is very slippery in athletic shoes. I watched a number of people fall down repeatedly. Never have I ever been so glad to have sturdy hiking boots. You've been warned!
That all being said (I seriously felt bad for all the people in athletic shoes and wanted ya'll to have some warning!), this is a great hike to tackle. It's challenging on the way up but very rewarding. It's a beautiful area and the view at the end is spectacular. People of all ages and abilities can make it on this trail, but it will be tiring and you will be out of breath. I was extremely glad to have hiking poles. Enjoy!
