Trip Report

Thornton Lakes and Trappers Peak — Sunday, May. 27, 2018

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

Awesome climb, pristine views. 2/3 of us felt confident to scramble on some dried up rock to the summit. We were in trail runners and trekking poles all day. Didn't feel the need for ice axes, the snow was perfectly crunchy. Snow levels started around 4,000 feet. Total time: 8 hours, with 1.5 hours of "stopping time" to gawk at views of the South Pickets, eat snacks, and enjoy the view. Some nice cornices on the ridge to the summit. Also looked towards Mountain X with admiration, but it wasn't achievable this day - would like to return to bag more peaks in the area. Apparently someone noted there was a mama bear along the trail - did anyone else have this experience? We heard a sound, not confident it was a bear though.

And oh my - Mt Triumph was certainly triumphant.

Road up to the trail head made for a fun ride. Probably doable with a 2WD but take your time! It's a bumpy ride!
