June 17, 2018 - Just got back. We hiked from the 4109 Road trailhead. The trail is in great shape and the flowers are awesome. This is a moderate climb with a couple of shorter and steeper sections.
The 4109 road is as horrible as the worst report about it you've heard. Many people are finding little pulloffs along the first 1/2 mile of the road. After the first hairpin turn is a large gully in the road that stops many people. I had to get out and survey my route. I had to put my pickup truck into 4WD Low Range because it was spinning out in 4WD. After that are several other bad sections of road.
No permits are needed to park and there are no restrooms or water.
