Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Kelly Butte by EmDubya
The road there is mostly paved except the last 5 miles. Bumpy at some parts but easily completed with a sedan. There are a few gun ranges along the side of the road, and you’ll hear lots of gun shots. Some jerk(s) even shot up the last 7030 turn in sign, its riddled with bullet holes. Parking is scarce, but you can sort of create your own spot if you turn right instead of left into the trail head. The first mile is shaded then opens up to a great view of Rainier. Look for the trail sign on your right to start the ascent. Lots of switch backs. We took young kids 5 & 8 and it was a bit tough on them. The hike is south facing with little shade until you get to the top. I wouldn’t recommend it for young kids. Lots of commenters say its steep, but i found it pretty easy, except the rocks are loose, so careful coming down! The views are stunning, and there are wild strawberries in small patches. Great hike with views of Rainier.
