Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm — Wednesday, Sep. 26, 2018

We went up into the North Cascades for some fall color and that was just what we got, an intensive display of the oranges, reds and yellows going though the meadow along the ridge after breaking out of the forested switchbacks. You spend time walking into the sun which back lit the carpets of berry bushes to accentuated the warm colors.

We had lunch at the pass and among others there enjoying the view we were joined by a black bear about thirty feet away stuffing it's self with with leaves. It occasionally stood up to pull down the taller bushes.

The trail is in good condition throughout. The gravel section of the Cascade River Road has some serious wash boarding and the usual potholes.

Did you carry bear spray or anything like that?

I don't carry bear spray or any other deterrent. I have seen lots of bears over the years, and this was the closest one) but I haven't thought it necessary to carry something like that. Could depend on where I am. Thanks

It is just a matter of time before you get between a mother and her cub. To protect the bear, please use bear spray. If not, you have no chance and hence neither does the bear. By chance you are merely maimed, they will still track the bear and kill it. Save bears. Wear bear spray on your body whenever on the trail. Please.
