If you're looking for a close in dose of woods, this is a good choice. There are lots of trails to choose from and some nice views in good weather. We parked at the North parking lot by the gate. There is parking for3 cars and a loo, plus a couple more parking spots on the road. We took the Rooty trail, then the Up only, then checked out the North viewpoint, no Baker today. From there we took the Sidewinder to the top viewpoint and the tower you see from the freeway. Down the Ridge trail to the road, then down the road to Upper and Lower Surfer trails and out on the Lazy Boy. Most of these trails are in woods, there are some nice rotten old growth stumps that give an indication of the size of the trees that were once here. We ate lunch on a nice log, then continued back to the parking lot. To be honest, I was cold, it was windy and I really didn't get a lot of enjoyment on trail today, this was mostly a fitness hike. Luckily we missed the rain. I'm guessing we did about 5 miles altogether. Take a picture of the map at the TH. I"m posting a picture of the map so you can find the other trailheads, there are 4 on the north end(pictured on my map pic) on one on the southern end by the Darvil trail (not on my map pic).

There are actually two access points on the South end: One, the Darvil you mention, and the other the "Southern Connector," both from Hickox Road. We took the latter the other day and it links in with a portion of the hike you describe.

Thanks, I worked on the Darvil trail with WTA, but I wasn't sure where the official TH was

To be sure the Darvil and Southern Connector trailheads are separated by about a half mile...
