Trip Report

Mount Si — Saturday, Apr. 20, 2019

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area

Before I get into the summary of Mt Si, I'd like to first address some practical logistics: I used Metro's Trailhead Shuttle and it worked out PERFECTLY. Shuttles leave from the Seattle Central Library or the Eastgate P&R, price is $2.50 each way and travel time is comparable to your personal vehicle. I'm glad I used it because the lot was full upon arrival (1045a on a Saturday). Plus I saved my old Civic some gas.

Now onto the hike..

This was my first time to Mt Si.

I hiked the main trail that was filled with the usual switchbacks (there's an old trail and judging by the topographical map, it would've kicked my butt). On a Saturday morning, the muddy trail was busy with families, groups and  people training for whatever adventure they'll set out for this summer. So if you're looking for solitude, Mt Si ain't for you (at least on a weekend. Maybe try a weekday?).

The grade gradually increases further into the hike with little relief, so you're definitely gonna work out your hammie's and glutes. With the exception of a brief overlook toward the top half of the trail, you'll spend the majority of your hike in the thick of the forest. That means no views and no picturesque waterfalls & streams. There are two loops that diverge from the trail that I didn't take, so maybe they offer some diversity. You'll clear the treeline upon reaching the top, which is a pile of boulders where you can rest and have your snack reward. FYI: the birds and critters expect you to feed them. Don't fall for their cuteness or else we'll have granola bar-addicted wildlife and screw up the ecosystem.

Additionally, the weather for the metro area was forecasted as partly cloudy, which meant fully cloudy and fogged-in from bottom to top of Mt Si. If you want a sunny hike, make sure the forecast is clear.

Mt Si is perfect for an easy, get-outside-and-in-nature kinda hike. It's also great if you're in need of a workout. But if you're looking for isolation and amazing views along the way, this ain't the hike.

Sidenote: I reached the top in 1hr56m. I saw other folk who finished within 15 min -/+.
