I hiked up the old Mailbox Peak trail and down the new trail on Saturday, 5/4/19. It was a gorgeous sunny day and both trails were quite dry. The old trail was snow-free; and there was no snow on the final half-mile of trail leading to the summit (after the junction where the old and new trails meet up).
This was my first time on the old trail and I had assumed it would be more of a climber's boot pack type track but I guess plenty of people have used it-- it's much wider and smoother than I would have guessed. However, it can be rough and certainly the steepness is no joke!
I took the Trailhead Direct bus service to/from the trail and parked at the Issaquah Transit Center. Would highly recommend! No stress regarding parking or car prowls, better for the environment, and only about a 30 minute ride. See: https://trailheaddirect.org/
