Trip Report

Mount Muller — Monday, May. 27, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast

We got lucky with this one! Found a nice campsite at the horse camp even though it was late Sunday evening. Hiked Monday on the 4th day of a WTA 4-day trail work party. That being said, the trail was in perfect condition! A huge thank you to all the volunteers. I’m not sure what the trail was like before Monday but I know based on how much work had been done that it couldn’t have been great. From what little I could see of it, the divide trail looked slightly overgrown, definitely not as good as the newly updated route up. We hiked the full loop as described, taking the short side trail to the summit. Views of Mt Olympus from the ridge were great, although there are not many large areas to sit down and enjoy them. At the bottom of the hill, the route meets up briefly with the paved Olympic Discovery Trail before turning right back onto a dirt path. This right turn with a small sign could be hard to miss. The rest of the way is an easy, flat stroll through the woods. We went just over 13 miles total. Even though the trailhead and campground were busy Monday morning, we hardly ran into anyone on the trail since it seemed like most were also doing the same loop. Great day!
