Mica Peak — Wednesday, Jul. 3, 2019

Eastern Washington > Spokane Area/Coeur d'Alene

We did this hike from the Liberty Lake County Park side. We headed up the Loop Trail and turned toward the Edith Hansen riding trail. Once on the Edith H trail we took the right-hand junction that someone kindly labeled with Sharpie marker designating that this was the way to Mica Peak. This turn occurs after the long haul up the Edith Hansen hill. (Warning: after ascending this steep hill you'll see a sharp right junction heading North--don't take that--learned that from experience). About 100 yards later you'll come upon the correct Loop Trail post with Mica written in sharpie showing you the way. There is little to no signage from there, other than someone came along and put up orange streamers as a help at each junction, but who knows how long that will last. At the next two junctions you'll always take the right-hand choice. Then at the last junction you'll take a counter-intuitive left. I say counter-intuitive because shortly after this left you'll be descending for a short while, only to realize that you'll indeed make up this down with a bit more up. This climb is not for weak legs--it's up, up, and more up for 7 miles straight. There is no real pay-off at the end except the feeling of victory from reaching that dome and a few views of Spokane Valley. Worth doing once for bragging rights and amazing exercise, if nothing else!
