Trip Report

Heliotrope Ridge — Friday, Jul. 26, 2019

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

The trail still had plenty of wildflowers, which is what I was on the hunt for. The ranger at the Glacier visitor center said there were more flowers on the climber's trail, so we started to head way at the fork about 2 miles up, but then we encountered a guy coming down the climber's route who said the other route had a bigger variety of flowers and a better view of the glacier.

So we headed back to the normal hiker's route and weren't disappointed. The wildflowers were probably a little past their peak but they were still beautiful and plentiful.

The stream crossings were a little challenging and I did get my feet unintentionally wet, but oh well, it was a nice, sunny day. Views were incredible, trail not too crowded compared to some (although still with plenty of people). We did see a dog that had gotten separated from his owner up on the ridge but then found him again (we think). It was upsetting to see the dog off the leash and lost. The road was a pain but nothing that a Subaru with not particularly high clearance couldn't handle.

This hike gives you a lot of bang for your buck! Not too long, not too hard, but very rewarding.
