We arrived at the Big Four trailhead early afternoon and the first parking lot was not crowded at all. There’s two separate parking lots for the trail and I highly recommend the lot with the picnic tables. There’s interesting information about the history of the area, the geology, and wildlife. The story behind the lone fireplace in the field is fascinating and the Big Four Mountain provides a picturesque backdrop.
The first part of the hike starts off on a boardwalk through wetlands where you may spot some mid summer wildflowers.
Overall, the remainder of the hike is fairly easy, with a gradual incline, but rest spots with benches for those who may find the hike challenging. Lots of beauty to take in, including the bridge over the emerald colored river.
Arriving at your destination, the ice caves, was a big payoff this time round. Despite the clouds and occasional sprinkle, the ice caves are looking quite impressive this time of the year. Late July and August is a great time to go if you want to see large, gaping caves. Of course, mind the warning signs and enjoy the views from a safe distance! Lots of beautiful wildflowers and berries to study as well.
I have hiked this often, in my teens, 20s, and now my 30s. I have hiked this VERY pregnant and with little children. It is a definite must-see!
