Trip Report

Colquhoun Peak — Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Carl Calquhoun

The peak was locally known as 'Jackknife Peak' but was renamed by the request of the White River Recreation Service in 1932 for Carlton Colquhoun, a forest service employee who drowned the year before in nearby Pyramid creek. Colquhoun was a forestry student at the University of Washington. The peak was almost named 'Carlton' instead.

We stopped by the peak while jeeping in the area. The road to the trailhead seems passable even for those without high clearance or 4x4.

The trail is in great condition and we easily got to the top marked by a large stick and some rusted metal objects.

A few flowers were in bloom: Twinflower, White Campion, Woodland Penstemon and lots of mushrooms including one that looked like a fried egg.

While the summit was socked in with clouds, it was a pleasant day with alpine quiet punctuated by the sound of gunfire from the ad hoc gun ranges set up over the area.
