The dirt toad up to Yellow Aster Butte is rough but we still saw many passenger cars had made it. After that point you will want a high clearance vehicle. The one lane road is rocky and has deep pot holes, many of which are unavoidable.
The trail itself is well maintained and gets heavy foot traffic. I was surprised at just how many people were there considering the state of the road.
We made it without trekking poles but they would have been handy. Much of the trail is loose rock and there is one section that may be a little intimidating if you don’t hike much.
The weather was up and down, starting off with sun and ending with wind and rain at the summit. You’ll want to layer.
Once we reached the top the views were immaculate!
I do have a complaint. Although we arrived earlyish (9am), there were several large noisy groups on the trail and at the summit. Playing music, dogs off leash, and lots of shouting.
If you go on this hike get there early!
