Trip Report

Baker Lake - Maple Grove — Sunday, Sep. 1, 2019

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

It was a lovely day for a hike. Our initial plan was the Anderson & Watson Lakes Trail, however, since we had a 2004 Corolla, the road was WAY too rough. I would not recommend it if you don't have a FWD. It's a 10-mile drive down a very, very rocky, bumpy, pot-holey lane. I could just feel the beating our old car was taking. We turned around about 2.5 miles into the drive and decided to take a short hike along the Baker Lake South Trail instead. Saw two piles of bear droppings. Beware. At first we thought they were horse droppings, but they weren't horse droppings. There are bear hunters in the area and the animals are running scared, so BE CAREFUL! Otherwise, we enjoyed a pleasant walk up until Anderson Campground, where we stopped for awhile before turning back, as it was getting late. There were a few open campsites available, too, some equipped with fire rings and food storage, due to wildlife. Very clean areas with beautiful views of Mt. Baker and the lake.

I want to point this out, now: Be very cautious on the rocks by the bridge over the river, about half a mile into the hike. Those rocks are SLIPPERY. Anyway, we usually let our dog off leash when we rest near rivers, as there are no leash laws otherwise, and we never have had issues before. That day, our standard poodle jumped into a rather deep pool of water at the end of the river and could not get back out because the boulders were too high for him. I then panicked and freaked out, and my husband and I struggled to get our dog out. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to the man who happened to be there and witness this. He got into the water and helped our dog out. I am SO GRATEFUL to that guy, especially because my husband and I aren't very skillful swimmers! Ugh. This spot looks safe to the eye, but there are one or two places that are VERY deceiving. I would leave the dogs on the leash!!
