Lower South Fork Skokomish River — Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia
Fall colors along the trail

A late start to the day due to battling jet lag, but made it out to the trail anyway. We arrived at the parking area around 3 PM to find just a few other cars there. The road in is generally in good shape, but a few areas of caution: 1) There was considerable water on sections of the road just off highway 101, 2) The short unpaved portion of the forest road has many large potholes that forces you to stay extra vigilant, 3) There was a large rock on the paved portion of the forest road, but was marked by a bright pink ribbon so just be aware.

As expected, rain was falling and the trail was wet and muddy in many places. We were slowed down by the amazing variety of mushrooms along the trail and the beautiful mix of the evergreens and the yellow maples. Rain eased up when we made it to the river, where fog filled in the valley and through the trees as we made our way out. Pictures below show snapshots of the beautiful fall colors. We turned around at the river due to losing light so we're not sure on the conditions farther down the trail.

We were the last ones off the trail just after sunset and were grateful for the peaceful time in the forest.
