We thought it would be faster if we rode our bikes on the maintenance road to Monte Cristo instead of walking. The maintenance road starts about 1/4 mile over Barlow Pass, just beyond the bridge. It’s a pretty rough road with a lot of rocks and a lot of ups and downs. We needed mountain bikes! We were constantly getting off and on the bikes trying to avoid either the rocks or the grade. Once the road joined the trail that starts at Barlow Pass things improved and we zipped along. It was fun exploring the town, reading about the history on all the signage. We hiked about a mile on the Glacier Basin trail, till we could see the waterfall off to the left.
Ran into 2 other groups of people with dogs on leashes, always a nice touch. On the way back we rode on the hiker trail - skipping the steep maintenance road - didn’t have any trouble crossing the river with the bikes.
It was a beautiful day even though it was a little frustrating at times. Great views of all the surrounding peaks.
