Trip Report

Mount Ellinor — Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Up the rocky, cloudy landscape

We knew the forecast wasn't favorable for good views today, but we wanted to hike up the mountain anyway. Because of the clouds, we opted for the Lower Trailhead to immerse ourselves in the forest regardless of what happened above treeline. The road to the Lower Trailhead is in great shape. A few rough potholes to watch out for, but overall any car will make it when taking it cautiously. There's no privy at the lower trailhead so if you duck into the trees there, make sure you pack out your toilet paper if you use it. We saw quite a bit of used paper back there.

We meandered through the foggy forest, enjoying what mushrooms were left and the bright green moss. As the switchbacks begin in earnest, the trail remains in excellent condition with only a few muddy patches. It has been years since we hiked this trail and we're so impressed by all the work that has gone into improving it, including the reinforced steps all the way to the top!

There was no snow or ice on the trail and only one tree down to step over. It was cloudy, rainy, and very windy at the top, but we sure felt alive and grateful to be able to hike up the mountain. We were grateful for our many layers, which we certainly needed at the top and shed on the way back down, and our hiking poles. A beautiful trail rain or shine, and not to be underestimated due to the steepness and the harsh weather this time of year.
