Trip Report

Kelly Butte — Monday, Jun. 20, 2022

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Incognito Tick

First time to KB this year!  Still patchy snow on the road towards the top (high clearance vehicle helpful...at least today).  Trail was snow free on the switchbacks.

PSA - Tick City!!! (To be expected this early in the season)

We are long time Kelly Butte enthusiasts and know the ticks are bad in the spring.  We went prepared - picardin, gaiters, tall socks, the whole works.  We made it almost to the meadows, but the tick count was just getting too high to continue into the tall grass (they seem to love the bear grass) so we turned around and saved the look-out for another day.

Headed up? Can I hitch a ride on your pants?

Rhabbie on Kelly Butte

Just did this hike today and found a tick on my leg when I got back to the trailhead... Did not realized ticks are worse in the Spring than in the Summer!
