My trip was originally envisioned as a four-day excursion up the Duckabush, over First Divide, and then down the North Fork of the Skokomish. But the snow in the pass exceeded my comfort level so I turned around at Home Sweet Home and backtracked out.
The trail through the National forest was in good shape. But between the park boundary and the Upper Duck Camp, I counted 140 down trees. Some you could step over. Some required a crawl under, a climb over, or a bushwhack around. The brush was pretty intense in places with the trail disappearing into ferns, shrubs, and small trees, sometimes way over my head. The intermittent rain throughout the whole trip ensured that everything stayed wet and heavy enough to be drooping over the trail. The trail was muddy in places and the streams were running full. The ford at Upper Duck Camp was knee-deep just downstream from the cross.
I spent the first and third nights at 10 Mile Camp and the second at the Upper Duck Camp. The camps were in good condition although the bear wire was down at 10 Mile and with a relatively new privy at Upper Duck. And there were quite a few flowers still blooming to brighten up the way.
It was good to be out in the Olympics. This was a grueling 40-mile trip that left me exhausted when it was over. But can't wait to get back out again.

Thanks for the report, Eeyore53! A friend and I have permits for the route you planned in 1 week, staying at Marmot Lake. I'd greatly appreciate any info re snow start point/depth & which pass you felt iffy about.
Kudos for being smart & turning around; that's always tough. You totally earned a hot shower & favorite post-hike indulgence!

From the Upper Duck Camp, I headed up to FIrst Divide. I saw the first snow just below the meadow at about 4000 ft. The meadow itself looked to still have a couple of feet of snow, based on what I saw. Marmot Lake is a bit higher at 4350, so I would suspect that it still has plenty of snow. This week should be warm, so the melt will continue quickly. But that could be bad news for the upper ford on the Duck. It will likely be challenging. Be careful with that ford and the ascent from the ford.

Thank you!
Thank you so much for the response & info! I found out an ONP ranger is going up to Marmot Lake via N Fork Skok Thurs, coming out Sat same way. I'll be sure to get intel from him on snow & the ford.
That was some hard core hiking you did! Good luck recovering & getting back out there.

That is actually a shorter approach to Marmot than going in from the Duckabush trailhead, although it does involve going over First Divide. Glad you will be able to get some more detailed intel before going out.
