We returned to Shi Shi after 14 years and found all of the beauty and power that we remembered.
For this trip, you will need 1) an Olympic National Park wilderness permit which you reserve on Recreation.gov, and can print shortly before your trip starts, 2) a Makah Recreational Pass ($20 for the year), which you can purchase at the Mini-Mart in Neah Bay, and 3) parking ($10 per day), which you can do on property .6 miles before the trailhead.
RANDOM NOTES:
The mud on the trail, though still present, was significantly less than we remembered, and very easy to navigate.
There was sufficient water in Petroleum Creek and very little tannin taste/color. Just walk up the creek until you see the log jam.
Exploring Point of Arches at low tide is so cool! We were walking through arches and peering into tidepools at a -1 ft tide.
The outhouses are new and clean. Use 'em!
Because of our work schedule, we camped Saturday night at Hobuck Beach Resort, just past Neah Bay, which gave us chance to sort gear and get an early start Sunday on our backpacking trip. We will definitely add this to future trips.
Breeze, who has inherited the parking business from his aunt Tilley, was welcoming and generous with information, as was the clerk selling the recreation pass at the mini-mart. We appreciated their good spirits.
I want to give a shout-out to Rainy Pass Repairs in Seattle. They fixed a separating zipper on my tent in under a week and it worked perfectly! So much better than buying a new tent.
