Trip Report

Barclay Lake — Monday, Aug. 29, 2022

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

Lovely overnight here on a Monday. Can't beat the beauty of the views! The road to the trailhead has lots of pretty deep potholes. I did it last year in a sedan, and it took plenty of concentration to navigate around the potholes. Doable, but not pleasant. This year I had the pick-up, so it wasn't a problem.

Arrived at the trailhead at 7:30 a.m. and found nine cars parked. When I returned at around 10:00 on Tuesday there were 12 cars with more arriving every few minutes. I would advise arriving before 10, even on a weekday, to get a parking spot.

Trail was pleasant, and I had it all to myself on the way to the lake. One spot with a tree down over the trail--easy to scramble under but a little tricky with a loaded backpack.

A few overnighters were camped at the lake when I arrived, but there was still a good selection of campsites. If you want to camp and find the lakeside spots taken, there are plenty more spots farther along the trail, and some of these are very nice!

The lake was quite low. No signs of bear--just chipmunks, fish jumping at dusk, lots of birds, and some assorted insects that were mildly annoying but not too bad.
