East Fork Foss - Necklace Valley — Thursday, Sep. 1, 2022

Central Cascades > Stevens Pass - West

Just an FYI: my party of three women were up near Jade Lake sept 1 and had what we expect was an unwelcome guest at our camp. Two party members sharing a tent woke up to a fully unzipped tent fly in the morning. Both recall hearing someone unzip the tent but being sometime in the wee hours of the night and half asleep thought the other person responsible so thought nothing of it until we discussed it in the morning. We do not suspect it was an animal or a lost hiker. No one in that tent saw any lights on during the zipper incident and no other unusual sounds during that time. As far as we can tell, nothing stolen even though multiple backpacking/camping items left outside. The hike was otherwise lovely but tough, we had toyed with the idea of day hiking to tank lake from jade but after the incident, we thought might be safer to head down. Heads up to anyone solo hiking or sees any unusual activity up there this weekend. Someone without a sense of personal boundaries may be afoot…

Thanks for sharing. Might be a good idea to report it to the ranger station.

That's a bit unsettling... Did you have neighbors, who might have gotten confused while returning from a mid-night bathroom trip?

Our closest neighbors were about a quarter of a mile up trail, not visible from our site, down a steep hill and over a large water crossing… we did consider that the party may have been responsible but quite a trip to make when you think about it and unlikely to have been an innocent mistake. Would like to think it was an innocent mistake but in this day and age, best to be overcautious.

A biner linking the zippers together from the inside is good casual security. A small cannon is also good peace of mind.

That's creepy. Please report this to the ranger and/or the sheriff. Although it doesn't sound like there is any information they can use to investigate, it would be useful for them to know about this if it happens again to someone else.

A can of “bear” spray stowed in your boot inside the fly might give the right message.
