Winchester Mountain — Wednesday, Sep. 7, 2022

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
The ridge I mentioned

The road is as bad as everyone says -- I did make it in my Subaru Forester without bottoming out but it's definitely a stressful experience. I tried to time it so that I'd be passing as few other drivers coming the other way as possible and I mostly succeeded, I drove up on the road at about 1030 and down around 3:30 after lingering at the lakes a bit. I would not personally do this hike on a weekend when the road is more crowded because it's so hard/dangerous to have to back up and find a spot to pass on such a rutted road.

The hike was straightforward, the trail is in good condition. There is one part where you're walking along a ridge with a steep drop off. Because of this section, I wouldn't bring a young child on this hike, but it wasn't too difficult to manage for me. No remaining snowfields as described in previous trip reports. The wildflowers are a bit past their peak but still pretty.

You can see the smoke from the Chilliwack fires and it did seem to get hazier as the day wore on, but with the way the wind was blowing, the air quality on the hike seemed fine and it didn't majorly impact the views.
