A quick overnight at Sheep Lake with a hike the next morning up to the gap. Was looking for something away from the smoke, and easy enough for my senior dog, since he loves camping so much. This fit the bill - a trail that’s great for older dogs, and all dogs alike, as well as kids. Parking is in a paved lot, off a paved road, so couldn’t be easier. Trail was packed and dusty, easy, very little in terms of rocks/roots (pretty much none). Plenty of sites to be found at Sheep lake, and it was nice to see some young families there. The cold is setting in however, and even in the space of a few days, I noticed that the leaves are starting to change their color. Berries are abundant, some wildflowers even, but both categories a bit past their prime. It did get pretty cold overnight, with low clouds in the morning. But still so beautiful with bits of blue sky peeking out and the sounds of pika all around. It was a perfect trip. Gray jays abound, as well as a chubby chipmunk looking well-fed, but on the search for extra snacks :)
Note: Norovirus warnings are posted at the parking lot, and facilities there are unmaintained. Be sure to be careful about your water sources, filter your water, or boil 10 mins.
