Trip Report

Yellow Aster Butte — Friday, Oct. 7, 2022

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area

Weather: Started at 11am, and it was quite hazy and a bit smoky out. Views of Mt. Baker were pretty faint. It was also much hotter than we were expecting, got up to mid 70's.

Road conditions: The potholes at the very beginning of the dirt road are the worst of it, everything beyond is quite manageable even in a low-clearance vehicle.

Bugs: I got stung by what looked like a bald faced hornet about 10 min into the hike, so watch out if you're allergic. Otherwise not a problem until the top of the butte, where we got bit a few times (not by a hornet!) and there were some annoying flying ants.

Even with the haze, this hike was incredible, and I can't wait to see it in springtime.

Mt. Baker faintly visible in the distance.
