Mount Rainier Area > NE - Sunrise/White River
On Fremont Lookout Trail

I have hiked all around Fremont Lookout over the years but never up to it. Admittedly, I felt I could get the views from other hikes like Skyscraper Mountain and Burroughs 3 without the crowds. Well, after yesterday's hike, I now know I should have done this one years ago....and also remember the statement I've made before..."Everywhere you go and every time of the day at Rainier you get a different perspective and view".

This is a nice hike...not too difficult but with hike-stopping views all around. Interesting and beautiful clouds above Rainier, Burroughs uncoiling its three humps in front of you, Grand Park in the distance, mountains in all directions, views of Rainier's apron of glaciers sparkling in the sun....and that tiny dot of a lookout tower in the distance gradually getting closer. Need I say more? If you have the chance, do it...don't wait like I did.

The trail is dry and dusty as expected and yesterday had a smoky, hazy view to the north...but still beautiful. Left the Sunrise parking lot at 10:45, moderate pace with stops to stare and photograph, at top around 12:45. Dinked around the lookout tower, ate lunch with an audience of chipmunks performing but not getting fed for it and headed down...back at lot around 3:15

There were no bugs except for a few pesky yellowjackets. The trail was fairly crowded but everyone was friendly and considerate. Lot was 1/3 to 1/2 full on arrival a little after 10 and about 1/2 full on return. Toilets were open. Be mindful of road work for paving/striping, etc and some other work on 410 between Enumclaw and the exit onto the road to Sunrise.

Fall colors are vibrant in the sunlight this time of year. But, if you go, check on road closings....check to make sure the road is still open. It is that time of year.
