Cutthroat Pass via the Pacific Crest Trail — Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2022

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Fall color just below Cutthroat Pass

The larches are putting on quite the show this year! The continued summery weather led to the bizarre and wonderful experience of hiking through a golden larch forest in a tank top and coming home with the hint of a sunburn. As noted by others, there is currently no water up among the larches. The last chance to refill water is ~3 miles from the trailhead, so prepare accordingly. The trail itself is in excellent condition, which means you can devote your full attention to admiring the view in all it's golden framed splendor.

My friend and I arrived at the trailhead at 9 AM and snagged one of the last parking spots in the lot itself. We took our time on the hike up, with lots of stops for photos and eating the occasional ripe blueberry. While we passed several groups, the trail never felt crowded - a definite perk of hiking on a weekday!

Just a few hints of green left among the gold
