Given Anacortes was the only area with a decent air quality on Saturday, I decided it was time to return to climb Mt. Erie after missing the turnoff last time and accidentally climbing Mt. Sugarloaf instead (which was enjoyable nonetheless!).
What a great trip! The trailhead was busier this time, but I still found a place to park. I chose to detour around Whistle Lake to warm up my legs before ascending and given a longer day, I would have allotted more time to enjoy the lakeside. Plus there was a beautiful view of Mt. Erie from the far side.
Toward the top, as others have noted, it became very rocky and root-covered.
My GPS was having a hard time keeping me on track, so I'd definitely recommend having a print out map and only using GPS as back up/tracking. My GPS recorded a net 1000 ft elevation (as noted here), and ~1750 ft in total.
The summit was absolutely magnificent. I'm glad it's accessible by car, I think everyone should get to see that view. Again, I wish the sun wasn't setting so early (or that I had gotten up earlier ha!) I would have loved to have spent more time up top before having to run back down.
A very steep trail system, but lovely nonetheless. Thanks ACFL!
