Just completed a one way thru hikes. Snow/compact ice really starts around 4.6 miles for some stretches (no snow/ice in areas where the trail is in older tree stands). I brought along traction devices but didn’t need to use them with my trail runners.
Didn’t see many people until about a mile above the Upper Rattlesnake Ledges. Trail is well marked and easy to follow, even in the snow.
