It was a solid day of rain with intermittent fog on the Lower Lena Lake trail for this Black Friday. Despite the tall trees throughout, you get doused when it rains. I got to test all the rain gear and new waterproof mittens. The parking lot had some lingering patches of ice but no snow or ice remained on the trail from the dumping a couple weeks ago and the bathrooms are stocked. The doors don't close well. Who cares. We're headed into another snow system and Hamma Hamma Rd. gets bad when it snows. Be ready to turn back. A great alternative if you have to turn back is Mt. Walker. It's not too far. Happy trekking!

What type of waterproof mittens do you use and did they work?

I got Gordini Lily Mittens - Women's from REI. They work great for at least three solid hours of hard rain hitting them. My hands were still warm and dry inside. They have a zipper pocket for hand warmers. If the hike was longer, I'd break those out. They arm warm so I learned the hard way when you take them off to cool off don't let them dangle off your wrists with the wrist bands they come with or they will fill with rain water. Total bummer when that happened a few weeks back.

Love to hear the discussion on gear — definitely the time of year when you find out if you have any gaps when you head out.
