This was the second day of doing speed workout on the Old Trail. On Sunday the trail was frozen from bottom to top and in great shape for fast moving. Using microspikes made it very runnable. Once out of the trees the trail goes up the hill instead of using the summer trail and in spots was 2-3 feet deep. On Tuesday the trail saw a lot of thawing from the road to the 1.5 mile area where temps were below freezing. That meant the trail was sloppy early and sluggish as you broke through a minor crust. The upper half was still solid and above tree line saw windblown drifts that I broke through up to my waist. I did a double on Saturday in under 6 hours.
Gear needed: microspikes, emergency blanket, poles, water and nutrition.
