West Tiger Railroad Grade, Poo Poo Point - Chirico Trail & Tiger Mountain Trail — Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023

Issaquah Alps > Tiger Mountain
Lenticulars Near Rainier

This was our first time going up to West Tiger from the Poo Poo Chirico trailhead.  It is a longer route but it is also much less crowded than the standard West Tiger 3 or Cable Line trails.  It also has the advantage on a sunny day of being mostly on the bright south side of the mountain.

I do wish that people would stop leaving dog poop bags on the trail. It is disgusting.  Even if you are leaving the bag with the intention of picking it up on the way back, you will induce dysphoria in every hiker that gazes upon it.  Why would you want to do that?  Just bury the poop in some leaves if you don't intend to carry the bag.  This was not a thing 20 years ago. Are people just getting stupider?

The One View trail traverses some very pleasant forest.  There was one wind fall that was recently cut (thank you) but the lifted root ball has destroyed a 15 foot segment of trail on a steep slope.  It is a little tricky to get across this part.

Dramatic Erratic is on the TMT just below W Tiger 2.  It is amazing to think that the massive Cordilleran Ice sheet (~13,000 BC) was thick enough to flow over the top of Tiger Mountain and deposit this huge rock!

The West Tiger Railroad Grade is relatively flat as expected but there are severe creek ravines that have to be crossed along the way.  There are several wind fall on this trail as well.

I removed lots of branches from the trail but there's plenty more to do. Always leave it better than when you started.

Amazing 14 year old Ms Maddy kept up like a trooper.

Lollipop Loop 11mi and 3000ft

Dramatic Erratic
Big Fir on Chirico. Top blown off but still alive.
Squak from W Tiger

Amazing statistics! The days are long gone when we could do so many miles and elevation gain, but we are thankful for those days and thankful we can still meander! So glad Maddie can still keep up with you! :)!

Ok, I’ve thought a lot about the dog poop thing. I think everyone knows that leaving poop in the middle of the trail is gross and antisocial/unethical behavior.. so they put it in a bag so they can tell themselves that (of course!) they’re going to pick it up later. And then when they don’t they can think well but of course I wanted to and meant to! I just made a mistake and accidentally forgot. Everyone makes mistakes. I’m not a bad person! No one wants to think of themselves as being “bad” or unethical.. and yet humans still want to do selfish things. So you have to come up with some doublethink reason why what you’re doing is actually ok, or not that bad, or at least not your fault. Either that, or they never intend to pick it up but they’re making a show of bagging it so other people will think they’re responsible and good. Or, they see that other people are doing it and so they assume it’s ok and someone is cleaning it? Anyway those are my dog poop theories 😂

I’m with you though, leaving plastic lying around is so much worse than just hiding the poop under the leaves..

That erratic looked a little different when it was hidden in the forest before the clearcut.

There used to be a nice chanterelle patch there
