Quick morning trip up Mailbox to catch a bluebird day. Made a loop of it going up the old trail and back down the new one. Middle Fork road and the trailhead lot were snow free and dry. Not too many cars in the lot and only saw a few people heading down on my way up the old trail. I put on microspikes after about half a mile and there was consistent hard-packed snow until reaching the junction with the new trail and hitting the summit ridge talus slopes where postholes started. There's about half a foot to a foot of fresh snow up top with a layer of icy crust beneath, and the level varies depending on where the wind blows. Mailbox post was completely buried and there's a lot of snow up top. Be careful with potentially unstable bits and varying conditions. Ran down the new trail, it's in great shape with the entire tread hard-packed and easy to manage most of the way. Spikes are probably a must up top, and poles were pretty helpful too (and great for glissading down the ridge). Up in 1 hr 24 mins down in 1 hr. Photo link below!

Great trip report and that first photo is so cool! Sounds like a great day for a trail run.
