5.17.2023 – Enchantment Peak, Cannon Mountain
Someone threw a Core permit back so I decided to squeeze in a mini solo camping trip in the Enchantments. Awesome trip all around. I ascended up the Snow Lakes side and camped at Lake Viviane (my favorite lake). During the ascent I got caught in the craziest lightning and hailstorm I’ve experienced. The thunder roared and echoed through the basin. Truly epic (though I was sad to have lost my coat in the sideways wind as I was soaked).
Waist-high postholing was commonplace from Snow Lakes onward. Snow bridges are collapsing like crazy! The core lakes are melting quickly. Enchantment Peak has some great rock at the top and is snow free after 8000’. The final friction boulder on Cannon was wet and slick so I climbed it in my wet socks. The boulders at Druid Plateau are ripe for bouldering - such a great spot.
Upon returning, I found my coat hanging at the trailhead! Thanks strangers (I’m guessing this was the deed of the kind trio I met at Nada).
On the way home, I was treated to spectacular views on I-90. Winter is officially OVER!
