Eagle Peak Saddle — Saturday, May. 20, 2023

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise

Our group of 15 arrived at the TH at about 10AM.  There were just 2 cars at the TH parking lot.  About 1.8 miles into the hike we encountered slush snow patches which were not too bad of condition to maneuver without microspikes or crampons.  At about  2.5 mile point, most of us put on the microsikes but some managed just fine without them.  Just about 200 ft below the peak, we scrambled as the trail disappeared under the snow and the clime became quite difficult due to severe slope.  Luckily, one of our team members brought a sturdy rope which he tied to a tree.  Most of us utilized the rope to come up another 50ft or so.  We could see the peak just in front of us less than 100ft or so but we deemed it was a bit too risky to fight to reach the peak so we turned back.  However, one of our team leads braved the condition and made to the top of Eagle Peak, see the picture.

Overall, it was a wonderful day and an awesome hike.  We thoroughly enjoyed all the splendid views around the Mt. Rainier and the surroundings.
