We hiked out to Gillette lake for a short overnight trip. Trail is in really good condition, no mud or blowdowns. Lots of fun wildflowers along the trail - saw what looked like penstemon and some western honeysuckle, all in full bloom.
There are parts of the trail that are exposed, others go through the forest. Lots of different things to look at between the big trees, flowers, and surrounding mountains.
There are 3-4 campsites around Gillette lake, maybe more if you are willing to explore. There was nobody else at the lake so we picked a spot right along the shore! There are power lines and you’re right near an active logging road, so it doesn’t feel quite so isolated. But it’s a nice lake and would make for a good beginner overnight trip!
Also - there are a lot of great spots to stop after your hike. If you're willing to drive a little bit, 30 mins to the east is Savage Grace winery - tasting room open Saturdays and Sundays. Great wine and has a fantastic view of the gorge, plus the drive there is so beautiful! There's lots of great spots just up the road in Stevenson, our favorite is Walking Man Brewery!
