Tahoma Creek Suspension Bridge - Emerald Ridge Loop, Westside Road & South Puyallup Trail — Sunday, Jun. 11, 2023

Mount Rainier Area > SW - Longmire/Paradise
Emerald Ridge never disappoints.

With the Tahoma Creek trail closed, I thought I would take the Westside Rd up to Round Pass, head up to Emerald Ridge, down to the suspension bridge and then backtrack to Round Pass for my hike today.

I started by half riding, half walking my bike up to Round Pass. There is a bike rack at the Lake George TH.

Once my bike was locked up, I took the connector trail across Westside Rd and dropped down the 0.6 mi to the South Puyallup trail.

The connector trail and the S. Puyallup trail are snow free with a couple of blow downs (easy to get over) to the campsites.  Today there was an inversion layer.  Hence, it was raining/misting until I got to the 4,600ft level.  The beginning of the S. Puyallup trail is really green after all of the rain.

There were some snow patches starting around 4,300ft on the way up to Emerald Ridge.  Easy to traverse.  The patches are small enough, you can see the trail and pick it back up easily.

It was blue sky up on Emerald Ridge.  Goats in the distance and the resident marmots kept my interest.  It was so gorgeous on ER, I ended up spending a couple of hours soaking up the sun and solitude.

I never made it to the suspension bridge due to how much time I spent on ER.  Time well spent.

I headed back down the way I came.  I didn’t see anyone until I saw a trail runner at the junction with the connector trail back up to Round Pass.

Mgads, was that you?

Once back to my bike, it was a quick trip back to my car.  I did see a couple of solo hikers and a couple of groups heading up Westside Rd.

Resident marmots where standing guard as usual.
Inversion layer creating rain at lower elevations.
Lower section of the South Puyallup trail is very green after all of the rain.

Mgads on Tahoma Creek Suspension Bridge - Emerald Ridge Loop, Westside Road, South Puyallup Trail

It wasn't me this time. It was me on first Burroughs late last year. I'll keep my eye out for you. I usually start out pretty early, but not as early as you seem to.

I've never been to Emerald Ridge and your report is inspiring me to do it! I don't have a bike so the hike up Westside Road will be a bit long and boring, but hopefully I'll get to see the same beautiful views you had. Thanks!

You should definitely give it a try walking the road! I have done it without a bike in the past. It is 8 miles of a nice FS road. 4 miles up when legs. 4 miles down after all of the hard hiking is done. I think it is about 1,000 ft gain over 4 miles. Really not that bad at all. It was nice to have the bike to glide down after the hike. But not necessary to enjoy this gorgeous part of the park.

Thanks! I've been up the road to the TH for Gobblers Knob and know what you mean about going up when your legs are fresh! Was hoping to give it a go tomorrow but weather isn't looking the greatest and I don't want to 'waste' my legs if I'm not going to get the fabulous views that you did. One of these days....

Thank you!
Do you know if the Tahoma Creek Trail will every get repaired? We used to go up Westside Road to access the suspension bridge. It is still a lovely trail in spots but has greatly deteriorated and now I've afraid will disappear.
Thanks again for all your fantastic reports!
