Trip Report

Silver Lake - Monte Cristo — Friday, Jun. 16, 2023

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Silver Lake

We started off attempting to drive to North Fork Sauk River Trail but a downed tree blocked the road. We looked on the map and decided to pivot and hike to Silver Lake from Barlow Pass instead.

Road is open, easy drive in. The trail to Monte Cristo is nicely managed, the trail stewards were even there on the hike out fixing up the trail (thank you)!

The trail was pretty much snow free up to Poodle Dog Pass, the snow appeared at the junction to Twin/Silver Lake. The trail to Twin Lakes is likely all snow covered. We headed toward Silver Lake. At first glance it was all snow-covered, but we continued hiking and found a nice camping spot that was melted out. We had the whole place to ourselves, and were probably the first ones up there given the lack of footprints leading up to the lake. It rained all night starting from 5pm but we were lucky to see the 3/4 frozen lake when we got up there before the fog/clouds rolled in. The next morning, we packed up and headed out and saw many people hiking up who stayed at Monte Cristo the night before.
