Trip Report

Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) Section J - Snoqualmie Pass to Stevens Pass, Kendall Katwalk & Spectacle Lake — Saturday, Jul. 29, 2023

Snoqualmie Region > Snoqualmie Pass
Spectacle Lake.

Did a 16.5 mile out and back trail run on Section J of the PCT, ran from Snoqualmie Pass to Spectacle Lake and back for a total of 33 miles round trip. Arrived around 6:10am, lot was about 1/3rd full.

The large tree that was down across the trail about 4 miles from the trailhead has now been cut so no longer poses any issues, thank you for the trail maintenance.

Trail is completely snow free for the stretch from trailhead to Spectacle Lake. No wildflowers in bloom. There are water sources until Ridge and Gravel Lakes but then nothing close to trail for at least 8 miles so it can be a long, dry stretch if you are out of water.

The trail turns to scree and rocks from about mile 8 so the pace slowed to be mindful of foot placement. The scree field from just below Chikamin Peak lasts just over 4 miles while you walk below the peaks of the Four Brothers. Keep them as a reference point and once you pass the final peak, you soon turn the corner and start descending towards Park Lakes. This is where the bugs first appeared but for the rest of the entire route they weren’t an issue but I did use bug spray before setting out. Saw many Marmots and one Mountain Goat guarding the trail, I had to pay the toll!

There are some places to sit and look down at Spectacle Lake and the surrounding peaks, a real stunning view. This entire stretch is superb and has some of the best views in the state!

Saw many friendly people that were doing the entire PCT, what an experience that would be! Once I got to Ridge Lake again the trail became fairly busy with day hikers but everyone was in good spirits enjoying the sunny day.

No matter how much of this trail you do, you are in for a treat, grand views, easy trail to follow and you will encounter many friendly folk. Just do your research, know your limits and plan accordingly. This trail takes you deep into the Apline Lakes Wilderness so you will be a long way from civilization and there are pretty much no bail out points. So pre-planning your adventure is imperative.

Stats from the run -

8 hours, 8 mins.
33 miles.
8,258ft of elevation gain.
