Goat Ridge, Snowgrass Flat — Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023

South Cascades > Goat Rocks

Our WTA work party cleared trees from the Snowgrass Flats and Goat Ridge trails. We worked the Snowgrass Flats trail from the Snowgrass trailhead and cleared all of the downed logs from the trail.

The road was dusty with lots of washboarding going up. It took almost an hour to drive once we left the paved highway. Since we arrived on Thursday morning, there was plenty of parking. However, two days later the parking lot was full with folks parking long the road.

We cleared over 20 trees from the Snowgrass Flats trail. Thursday night, we camped where the trail crosses Goat Creek. There were good camp sites, and a larger area for camping where stock cross the creek. Be aware that we found a ground wasp nest near the trail, and they are busy and angry this time of year. We also found yummy huckleberries nearby.

On Saturday, we parked at the Berrypatch parking lot and worked our way up the Goat Ridge trail. We cleared over 15 trees from the trail, and ran out of time before reaching the ridge. The parking lot was absolutely crammed with cars, and folks parked over a mile down the road.

For those with extra time, consider arriving the night before and staying at the Chambers Lake campground. It has a vault toilet, but no potable water. The lake is beautiful and would be great for swimming.
