I headed out this morning knowing that it would more than likely be raining. Went up to see if I could catch somewhat of a sunrise anyway.
Even though Mt Rainier was going in and out of clouds early, it was a great hike.
Today's hike reminded me of the microclimates of MRNP. It was pouring rain and 45 degrees at the parking lot. Dry but foggy at Dege Peak and 38 degrees.
Heard my first bugling elk of the year. Seems a little early for rut season. Everything seems to be moved up by a month this year. Including wildlife getting ready for winter.
Fall colors are coming in nicely. The moisture is helping brighten all of the colors. Both green and red. Some pasqueflower seedheads and asters are still hanging on.
The trail is no longer dry and dusty with all of the moisture recently.

George and I will wait for Oct., after Sunrise closes. Actually, the pic of The Mountain looks kind of refreshing. I already have a zillion of clear blue sky shots.

I had told myself that I would not go to the Sunrise area until the road closes. Between the weather and local school districts starting today, I thought I might be somewhat safe from crowds and took a chance. I was right! Only 4 cars in the parking lot at Sunrise and 2 cars at Sunrise Point when I left. Won't go again until the road is closed!

I'm curious the location of the Sunrise Road closure? Are you hiking all the way up from Hwy 410? or is there a closure closer to the Sunrise parking area? Thanks

Sunrise Rd is not closed for the season yet. We are talking about hiking up from White River CG when the road closes for the season. Usually around Sept 15th. Sometimes as late as Sept 30th. Typically, the road closes at the turnoff for White River Rd. However, it is impossible to predict when and what part of the road gets closed depending on weather and staffing. For now, the road is open all the way to the Sunrise Lodge.
