White Chuck Mountain — Monday, Sep. 18, 2023

It's a great short scramble.  The road in is long 7+ miles, and lots of large potholes.  After warming up on a flat trail of about 1.5 miles, the trail ascends a rocky path to some slabby benches.  Be careful with the dirt and loose rock - we kept left towards the rock and found the footing better.  The trail ascends through heather meadows and is easy to follow to the saddle between Which Chuck and its shorter peak White Chuck North West.  We saw three goats on a ledge mid-way up the shorter peak.  The trail follows the ridge up and wraps itself along the right side, carved into the mountain above steep cliffs. Be careful with the loose dirt - a fall here would be unfortunate, but otherwise it's a very manageable trail, especially if you have scrambling experience.   Continue upwards and about 300 feet of the summit, keep right - we found a path left and took us to a false summit and some unpleasant downclimbing.  You will encounter a notch requiring downclimbing about 10 feet, then up towards the final summit.  There is a brass Mountaineers summit register - cool to see one of these.
